GCU Esports Society App

Created as part of my 4th year honours project, utilising motivational elements within a mobile app design to encourage more people to join GCU’s Esports Society and help foster more engagement within existing members.

Utilising elements of gamification via understanding of motivational theory helped to shape the needs of the target audience of 18-25 year old GCU students. Alongside the theory research, interviews and surveys were utilised with both the current society members and prospective members. From there, issues were discovered, such as the GCU student association website, which is where students can sign up, as well as students sticking to cliques within the society, leading to disconnection between different factions within.

Non-members cited the number one reason the wouldn’t join a society as being time constraints. To alleviate this, guest are able to use the app to preview what is happening, with events, news, game nights, streams and looking for game notifications featured.

An iterative, user centric approach was utilised through the double diamond research and design method. This employed techniques such as Affinity Diagrams, User Persona’s, How Might We’s, Kano/MoSCoW and Crazy 8’s to help shape the final prototype created in Figma.
